Though I’ve been posting pages from my old journals and elementary/middle/high school creative writing assignments since 2005, this is the first time that I’m attempting to follow a schedule. So for the official debut of (retro)blog Thursday, I thought I’d keep with the 1988 theme of my Facebook status update and post the first two pages of a tongue-in-cheek nonfiction book I wanted to write with my best friend in eighth grade titled, Studs I Have Known:

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Q&A Monday!
I got so many questions (keep sending! keep sending!) that I was considering breaking it up into two different Q&A days but then I realized that such a decision would no doubt be detrimental to my overall productivity because I am not the impressive Meg Cabot who somehow manages to be both a prolific blogger AND novelist AND has still finds time time to ride her bike AND watch awesomely bad reality TV. I know my own limitations, so I’m sticking to Q&A Mondays, Senryu Tuesdays and (retro)blog Thursdays for now. That will keep me busy enough while I write BUMPED, my first post-Jessica Darling novel.
The first question comes from Amber Lyn, who happens to be the creator and mod of the longest running Jessica Darling fan site. Q. Why is it still called a retro blog, when obviously you need to admit […]

Now that I’m almost finished with all the promotional hoopla for Perfect Fifths, I’ve decided to restore the (retro) element of the (retro)blog. Starting today, I’ll post pages from my old journals, creative writing assignments and other juvenilia every Thursday. Senryu Tuesday will remain Senryu Tuesday. On Mondays I’ll answer one reader question, which means that you should start emailing me your questions now via megan@meganmccafferty.com with Q&A Monday as the subject. Wednesdays and Fridays will be off or free for news updates and/or pure randomness.
On Facebook this morning I completed the 15 Books in 15 Minutes meme. The Catcher in the Rye was #1 so I thought it would be fitting for me to post this essay I wrote for my eighth grade Language Arts class.

Bumped is the only reason why I haven’t been totally distraught about ending the Jessica Darling series. I’m spending the rest of 2009 and early 2010 writing it. Here’s the official announcement via HarperCollins:
Alessandra Balzer at Balzer & Bray/HarperCollins Children’s Books acquired World English rights to New York Times bestselling author Megan McCafferty’s new novel in a two-book deal from Heather Schroder at ICM. Bumped is a sharply funny and provocative dystopian novel set in a world where only teens are able to have babies, and are contracted by adults to carry them to term. Megan is best known for her Jessica Darling series, which started with Sloppy Firsts and most recently ended with Perfect Fifths.

I have the best job because:
1. I get paid to make up stuff like Barry-oke. (By now you should know all about Barry-oke. If you don’t, just click here.)
2. I get to have book signings in which I can ask my audience to make Barry-oke requests AND THEY WILL ACTUALLY MAKE BARRY-OKE REQUESTS.
3. I get to perform Barry-oke for in front of a live audience. THIS IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS.
For fun, I tallied up all the Barry-oke song requests from my signings in Princeton, NYC, Stamford, Tysons Corner and L.A. (I’m thinking about making a collage of all the requests once all the events are over.) Here are the results in descending order:
1. Copacabana/Mandy (tie–18 requests each).
It was no surprise when I picked Copacabana at my signings in NYC and Tyson’s Corner. Though Barry has much better songs to his credit, it seems to be the one that people remember him […]
