Thank you for making Perfect Fifths a NYT Bestseller!

April 23rd, 2009 by

A reader asked me: Does this still mean anything?
The answer: Yes. Very much so. But not in the way you might think.
When the global economy is in the crapper, and not a day goes by that I don’t read an article sounding the death knell for book publishing and print in general, readers like you spent your hard-earned cash to find out what happens to these characters I totally made up.
That means something to me. Making the list (to be posted May 3rd) is a sweet bonus.
Thank you.

10 Things You Need To Know About Perfect Fifths: #1

April 13th, 2009 by

1. It goes on sale tomorrow! And to celebrate, I’m giving away free autographed stuff.
Please buy Perfect Fifths in its first week on sale. That’s any time between Tuesday, April 14th and Monday, April 20th. Then:

a. Take a picture of yourself holding up your brand new hardcover copy of Perfect Fifths. Use it as your facebook or myspace profile pic, post it to your blog or anywhere you socialize online.
b. Write a review and post it on facebook visual bookshelf, amazon.com, bn.com, goodreads and/or wherever reviews are written and read. (In the interest of free speech, getting my autograph is not dependent on writing a five star rave, though I don’t know why you’d want a signed bookmark and/or bookplate if you think Perfect Fifths sucks because you’ll probably be P.O.’ed at me.)
After you do a. and b. provide your mailing address and all the appropriate links in an email […]

10 Things You Need to Know About Perfect Fifths: #2

April 10th, 2009 by

2. I’ve read Perfect Fifths about a dozen times by now. And not only am I not sick of it yet (which happens with authors and their own books, usually during the third or fourth round of proofreading and copy editing), there are parts that still surprise me. This is kind of crazy because I’m the one who made it all up.
I hope it surprises you. In a good way.
3. There is a “found” poem consisting entirely of phrases from the previous four books in the series. It begins with “marred kiss.” (I can’t tell you how the poem ends because that would be waaaaay too spoilery.)
4. Yes, the book spans a mere eighteen hours entirely in/around an airport. The main attractions are Jessica Darling and Marcus Flutie but fear not: All the beloved characters who are not at the airport–Bridget and Percy, Scotty and Bruiser, Len and Manda, Bethany […]

4. Yes, the book spans a mere eighteen hours entirely in/around an airport. The main attractions are Jessica Darling and Marcus Flutie but fear not: All the beloved characters who are not at the airport–Bridget and Percy, Scotty and Bruiser, Len and Manda, Bethany and Marin, Paul Parlipiano, Mac, Hy and (of course!) Hope–are essential to the story.
5. It takes place over eighteen hours in and around an airport. For research, I read Naked Aiport: A Cultural History of the World’s Most Revolutionary Structure. In it, I found this quote which served as the inspiration for the final scene of the series:
EXCUSE OUR APPEARANCES. WE ARE TEARING DOWN YESTERDAY TO MAKE ROOM FOR […]
