7. Fifty-six poems
written by Marcus and Jess
Here is one of his:
XXXIII. He writes
Everything we say
(what we don’t say, even more)
has double meaning
8. When I saw a photo of this painting in the newspaper, and read that it’s called The Desperate Man, my first reaction was, Oh my God! The Desperate Man! MARCUS! I ripped it out and kept it on my desk for months as I wrote Perfect Fifths. Late in the novel, a character makes the same connection and Marcus isn’t too flattered by it.
9. The 74-page conversation between Jessica and Marcus was inspired–in part–by the movie Before Sunset. This film’s final moments make for the most gorgeous, heart-stopping ending I’ve ever seen on screen.
10. Four words: Marcus Flutie shower scene.

So Perfect Fifths goes on sale in 20 days. (If you pre0rder there’s always the chance that you might actually get it early. I heard from readers who were thrilled when that happened last time.) Every other day from now until April 14th, I will reveal one of 10 Things You Need To Know about the book before it comes out. None of these 10 Things are spoilery, I promise.

Princeton to New York:
A Little Bo Peep drag queen*
Seated next to me
*To be fair, I’m not sure if s/he was a drag queen or not. But s/he was DEFINITELY dressed like Little Bo Peep.

Come join me and a bizillion other awesome teen authors this Sunday at Books of Wonder in NYC starting at 4PM. I won’t have copies of Perfect Fifths, but I will have a plenitude of Perfect Fifths bookmarks I can sign for you. I’m also bringing 200 Dum Dums. That’s right. Dum Dums.
Why Dum Dums? Why not a more sophisticated candy? First of all, Dum Dums is fun to say. More significant, I’ve realized that whenever I’m offered a free Dum Dum–usually at the kiddie barbershop after my six-year-old has gotten a haircut, or at the dry cleaners–I will TOTALLY TAKE THAT FREE DUM DUM LOLLIPOP and ENJOY the HECK out of it. The pineapple and butterscotch Dum Dums are my favorites. I also like the promise of all those saved Dum Dum wrappers. Like, if you suck enough Dum Dums you can get a Dum Dum backpack or Dum […]

I said The Perfect Fifths Jessi-ku/Mar-ku Contest would be the last opportunity to win Perfect Fifths before it goes on sale April 14th. Well, I was only half right. It turns out that my publisher has a few more Advanced Reader Copies left and I want to make sure they are put to good use.
I attribute the success of my series to word-of-mouth promotion by people like you. That’s why I’m giving these last books to the very readers who got me here in the first place. No book trailers or poetry required this time–just convince me that you can successfully spread the word about Perfect Fifths.
If you blog about books, write for a campus publication, or go by the name Michiko Kakutani email me by this Monday, March 23rd at noon EST with the links showing me how you’ll tell the world about the final book in the Jessica […]

As devoted readers of my books know, The Showman of Our Time has played a prominent role in the courtship between Jessica Darling and Marcus Flutie. His music takes center stage–literally–in a pivotal scene in Perfect Fifths involving Barry-oke.
What’s Barry-oke? Watch this video in which I sing the definition for you:

So the main reason I have a (retro)blog versus a regular blog is because I’m not all that interested in writing about my daily life. With the on-sale date of Perfect Fifths just over a month away–APRIL 14th!!!–I’ve had a lot more contemporary business to write about lately. However, to maintain the original intent of the (retro)blog, I’ve decided to post my very first professionally-published piece of work, a poem from the October 1988 issue of Seventeen magazine:
By the way, I totally had Heaven Sent Musk when I was in middle school and thought that if only the right boy sniffed me he would be unable to resist its powers of animal attraction. I was wrong. I also thought it should have been called Heaven Scent and considered myself quite the clever little copywriter for believing so.
